Rare coins like this one were minted by Jewish rebels as symbols of defiance against Roman rule. Here’s a closer description of the coin:
- Obverse (left side): The coin shows a stylized chalice with a pearled rim, a common symbol on Jewish coins of this period. Above the chalice, there is usually an inscription in ancient Hebrew, which would translate to “Year Two” or “Year Three,” denoting the year of the revolt.
- Reverse (right side): The reverse side seems to be more worn and difficult to decipher, but typically it would feature a vine leaf or palm branch, symbols of Judaean identity and independence, with Hebrew inscriptions around it.
The reddish patina and the wear suggest that this is an ancient coin made of bronze, typical for small denominations such as the prutah.
