Herod Agrippa I was a prominent ruler of the Herodian dynasty in the 1st century AD, known for his ties to the Roman Empire and his role in Judean history

Herod Agrippa I (10 BC–44 AD)

  • Background: Grandson of Herod the Great and Mariamne I. His mother was Berenice.
  • Reign: King of Judea, Samaria, and other territories. He ruled under the favor of the Roman emperors Caligula and Claudius.
  • Religion and Policies: Although a Roman client king, he observed Jewish customs and gained favor with his Jewish subjects. He is mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles in the New Testament.
  • Notable Event: He is infamous for persecuting early Christians, including the execution of the Apostle James. He also imprisoned Peter but died shortly after.
  • Death: According to the New Testament (Acts 12), he was struck down by an angel of God and died after being praised excessively by the people, reportedly for not giving glory to God.
